The Animal Welfare Sub-Unit of the NSW Department of Industry and Investment, in association with some members of the Extensive Livestock Industry and Development (ELID) sheep and beef team, have been developing procedures and training to help District Livestock Officers (DLOs) deal with RSPCA cases involving failure to provide animals with food. These procedures are being developed to ensure evidence collected will withstand a courtroom cross-examination. The resources developed will be extended to staff of various organisations involved in animal welfare cases with livestock. Several areas have been identified for future research that will improve these procedures. |

The Pantanal is an extensive sedimentary plain, with seasonal flooding and where extensive livestock farming is the main economic activity. Flood seasonality is a natural process in wetlands, it naturally fertilizes native pastures that occur in large areas in the Pantanal, being the basis of cattle feed. In regions that flood by overflowing rivers or those that flood directly because of rain, large areas of native pasture are submerged from time to time with critical depths and durations, and in extreme events, there may be a drastic reduction in the supply of food and even an increase of cattle mortality due to starvation or drowning. Over more than 200 years of coexisting with floods, management strategies such as the removal of cattle from low,... |

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been a problem for the Brazilian livestock since the XIX century. Once it affects the livestock productivity and has always been a problem for the country exports due to the imposition of sanitary barriers. In 1992, when no state was free from FMD, the National Program for Eradication of FMD (PNEFA) was implemented. Since then good results has been obtained with control and eradication of the disease in some states. However, in other states the problem still persists. It is important to determine why some states have faced difficulties in reaching the status of free from FMD while others not. This work aimed to identify the factors which discriminate the populations of states free from FMD from those not free. The results... |

The major objective of this paper is to identify determinants of market prices for cattle, sheep and goat in the export market value chain starting from pastoral markets to export abattoirs and live animal exporters. The study is based on the information generated through a formal survey conducted in the major pastoral livestock markets of Ethiopia with 128 collectors, small and big traders, feedlot operators, live animal and meat exporters. Hedonic price formation model was used to analyze the survey data. This study identified certain occasions such as Christian fasting, Muslim fasting, holidays and other times; time of a situation whether that specific month falls during ban time or not and season described as wet or dry season as important determinants... |

Abstract The contribution of Colombia to global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is low (0.37%); from this percentage, 38% is attributed to agriculture. There are few studies on GHGs emissions at the regional level for agriculture. Therefore, the aim of this research is to estimate dynamically GHG and carbon footprint produced by cattle in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. GHG estimates were established as follows: Tier II of IPCC methodology (2006), and population trends, which were simulated using dynamic system. According to the departmental livestock inventory in recent years (2009-2015), average emissions were 673 million of CO2eq. year-1, with emissions intensity (EI) of 5.58 kgCO2eq.kg.milk-1 and 3.54 kgCO2eq.kgmeat-1. Simulating the... |

While the significant ecosystem damage caused by invasive weeds has been well documented, the economic impacts of specific invasive weed species are poorly understood. Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L., hereafter YST) is the most widespread non-crop weed in California, resulting in serious damage to forage on natural range and improved pasture. A survey was administered to California cattle ranchers to investigate YST infestation rates, loss of forage quantity and value, and control or eradication efforts. The results were used to estimate county-wide economic losses for three focus counties, as well as state-wide economic losses, due to YST in California. Total losses of livestock forage value due to YST on private land for the state of... |
