Dealing with RSPCA cases AgEcon
Mason, Jane; Blackwood, I..
The Animal Welfare Sub-Unit of the NSW Department of Industry and Investment, in association with some members of the Extensive Livestock Industry and Development (ELID) sheep and beef team, have been developing procedures and training to help District Livestock Officers (DLOs) deal with RSPCA cases involving failure to provide animals with food. These procedures are being developed to ensure evidence collected will withstand a courtroom cross-examination. The resources developed will be extended to staff of various organisations involved in animal welfare cases with livestock. Several areas have been identified for future research that will improve these procedures.

Decision making support system for the adaptation and coexistence of extensive livestock farming in the dynamics of pantanal floods and droughts in face of climate change. Infoteca-e
PADOVANI, C. R.; ARAÚJO, A. F. de; ISHII, R. P.; MATSUBARA, E. T.; ESQUERDO, J. C. D. M.; ANTONIASSI, R. A. dos S..
The Pantanal is an extensive sedimentary plain, with seasonal flooding and where extensive livestock farming is the main economic activity. Flood seasonality is a natural process in wetlands, it naturally fertilizes native pastures that occur in large areas in the Pantanal, being the basis of cattle feed. In regions that flood by overflowing rivers or those that flood directly because of rain, large areas of native pasture are submerged from time to time with critical depths and durations, and in extreme events, there may be a drastic reduction in the supply of food and even an increase of cattle mortality due to starvation or drowning. Over more than 200 years of coexisting with floods, management strategies such as the removal of cattle from low,...

DETERMINANTES DA ERRADICAÇÃO DA FEBRE AFTOSA NO BRASIL AgEcon
Muller, Carlos Andre da Silva; Mattos, Leonardo Bornacki de; Lima, Joao Eustaquio de.
Foot and mouth disease (FMD) has been a problem for the Brazilian livestock since the XIX century. Once it affects the livestock productivity and has always been a problem for the country exports due to the imposition of sanitary barriers. In 1992, when no state was free from FMD, the National Program for Eradication of FMD (PNEFA) was implemented. Since then good results has been obtained with control and eradication of the disease in some states. However, in other states the problem still persists. It is important to determine why some states have faced difficulties in reaching the status of free from FMD while others not. This work aimed to identify the factors which discriminate the populations of states free from FMD from those not free. The results...

Determinants of Livestock Prices in Ethiopian Pastoral Livestock Markets: Implications for Pastoral Marketing Strategies AgEcon
Belayneh, Hailemariam Teklewold; Feye, Getachew Legese; Alemu, Dawit; Negassa, Asfaw.
The major objective of this paper is to identify determinants of market prices for cattle, sheep and goat in the export market value chain starting from pastoral markets to export abattoirs and live animal exporters. The study is based on the information generated through a formal survey conducted in the major pastoral livestock markets of Ethiopia with 128 collectors, small and big traders, feedlot operators, live animal and meat exporters. Hedonic price formation model was used to analyze the survey data. This study identified certain occasions such as Christian fasting, Muslim fasting, holidays and other times; time of a situation whether that specific month falls during ban time or not and season described as wet or dry season as important determinants...

Development of a calculation model and production cost index for feedlot beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Sartorello,Gustavo Lineu; Bastos,João Paulo Sigolo Teixeira; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a feedlot beef cattle calculation model and production cost analysis and, from the results obtained, devise a production cost index. A case study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the productive processes of a commercial feedlot. Then, based on the Economic Theory, cost items of the farm under analysis were identified and transferred to a spreadsheet. The survey included ten feedlot farmers from the state of São Paulo and other nine from the state of Goiás and was carried out to determine representative properties, and prices of items used were monitored. Production costs of each farm were calculated, and theoretical concepts of index numbers were used to devise the feedlot cattle...

Disaggregate Productivity Growth in Livestock Production: A Directional Malmquist Index Approach AgEcon
Ludena, Carlos E.; Hertel, Thomas W.; Preckel, Paul V.; Foster, Kenneth A.; Nin Pratt, Alejandro.
Limited data on the allocation of inputs to different activities has limited agricultural economists' attempts to measure sub-sector productivity growth in agriculture. However, recent developments have enabled us to estimate total factor productivity (TFP) growth for crops and livestock accounting for input-output allocation. This paper extends previous work on TFP measurement for livestock into ruminants and non-ruminant productivity measurement, given the differences in productivity growth rates among these species. The results show that the non-ruminant sector is more dynamic than the ruminant sector, driving most of the productivity growth within the livestock sector. Given the rapid rates of productivity growth observed recently, non-ruminant...

Dynamic estimation of greenhouse gas emissions from bovine livestock of Valle del Cauca, Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Molina Benavides,Raúl Andrés; Sánchez Guerrero,Hugo; Campos Gaona,Rómulo; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Morales,Juan David.
Abstract The contribution of Colombia to global emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) is low (0.37%); from this percentage, 38% is attributed to agriculture. There are few studies on GHGs emissions at the regional level for agriculture. Therefore, the aim of this research is to estimate dynamically GHG and carbon footprint produced by cattle in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. GHG estimates were established as follows: Tier II of IPCC methodology (2006), and population trends, which were simulated using dynamic system. According to the departmental livestock inventory in recent years (2009-2015), average emissions were 673 million of CO2eq. year-1, with emissions intensity (EI) of 5.58 kgCO2eq.kg.milk-1 and 3.54 kgCO2eq.kgmeat-1. Simulating the...

Economic Growth and Transition in Vietnam and China and its Consequences for their Agricultural Sectors: Policy and Agricultural Adjustment Issues AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
Secondary data are used to discuss and compare the consequences for agriculture of economic growth and transition in Vietnam and China. It is found that China and Vietnam have experienced similar adjustments in their agricultural sectors and face at this time, similar agricultural policy problems. China began its economic reforms in 1979 and Vietnam followed in 1986. Since then both countries have experienced rapid economic growth, falling poverty rates and significant rises in per capita income. At the same time, substantial restructuring of their economies has occurred, a feature of which has been a decline in the relative contribution of agriculture to total employment and output. These changes are outlined. Significant changes have also occurred within...

Economic Impacts of Yellow Starthistle on California Ranchers AgEcon
Eagle, Alison J.; Eiswerth, Mark E.; Johnson, Wayne S.; Schoenig, Steve E.; van Kooten, G. Cornelis.
While the significant ecosystem damage caused by invasive weeds has been well documented, the economic impacts of specific invasive weed species are poorly understood. Yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L., hereafter YST) is the most widespread non-crop weed in California, resulting in serious damage to forage on natural range and improved pasture. A survey was administered to California cattle ranchers to investigate YST infestation rates, loss of forage quantity and value, and control or eradication efforts. The results were used to estimate county-wide economic losses for three focus counties, as well as state-wide economic losses, due to YST in California. Total losses of livestock forage value due to YST on private land for the state of...

Effect of Wood shavings on the Temperature Profile of Livestock Waste during Composting with Daily Turning CIGR Journal
Ngwabie, Ngwa Martin; Tiku, Tabe David; Yengong, Lamfu Fabrice; Manga, Ebot Veronica.
Measurements were conducted to assess the impact of wood shavings on the temperature profiles of cattle and pig manure during aerated composting. Cattle stomach waste to wood shavings were mixed in mass ratios of 100:0%, 80:25%, and 75:25% and placed in three different chambers. Pig manure was also mixed with wood shavings in ratios similar to that of cattle stomach waste and placed in three different chambers. The piles were left to compost for 21 days after which the experiment was repeated. During composting, each pile temperature and pH were measured daily. On each measurement day, the compost pile in each chamber was weighed and aerated by moving into an empty chamber. Compost samples were collected from each chamber twice a week for dry matter and...

Effects of Clean Water Act Regulations on Firm-Level Decisions in Agriculture AgEcon
Sneeringer, Stacy E.; Key, Nigel D..
U.S. environmental regulations often vary by the size of the operation, with larger operations facing more regulatory stringency. When the size distribution of firms is heavily skewed, regulation size thresholds can reduce transaction costs for regulatory agencies while bringing most production within a regulatory framework. However, size-based regulation may have unintended consequences if operations downsize, slow their growth, or enter at a smaller size in order to avoid regulation. These unintended consequences from regulation may include less pollution abatement and diminished economic efficiency. In this study we examine recently revised Clean Water Act (CWA) regulations targeting large-scale livestock operations to identify and quantify farm...

Effects of Environmental Regulation and Urban Encroachment on California’s Dairy Structure AgEcon
Sneeringer, Stacy E..
Environmental regulatory compliance costs are often cited as a factor in dairy location decisions, but few studies estimate the impacts of regulation in this sector. This article uses California dairy regulations to examine the pollution haven hypothesis in agriculture. Dairy industry regulation has varied regionally within the state, with the more strictly regulated Southern California region losing production and the more environmentally lenient Central Valley gaining production. Results show that even after controlling for population density and property values, regulation had significant negative effects on dairying in Southern California.

Effects of Environmental Regulation on Economic Activity and Pollution in Commercial Agriculture AgEcon
Sneeringer, Stacy E..
Research on environmental regulation’s effects on economic activity has largely focused on manufacturing, ignoring one of the major polluters in the U.S. – commercial agriculture. As livestock production has become increasingly mobile, regulation has become an important criterion in firm location. This article extends the literature on environmental regulation’s economic effects to commercial agriculture by exploiting a series of regulations adopted in North Carolina in the 1990s. During this time, the state’s hog production more than tripled as a consequence of welcoming state legislation. This sudden growth creates an opportunity to study how environmental regulation affects the location of economic activity, the externality costs of legislation...

Effects of Yucca schidigera on gas mitigation in livestock production: A review BABT
Sun,Deng-Sheng; Jin,Xiao; Shi,Binlin; Xu,Yuanqing; Yan,Sumei.
ABSTRACT Yucca schidigera extract (YSE) has received much interest in the application of manure deodorization and hazardous gas mitigation in livestock rearing conditions. The main objective of this review article was to summarize the current knowledge regarding YSE towards its gas mitigation from livestock excrement. Saponins have been considered to be vital components of YSE in odor control and gas reduction in intensive farming industry due to their potentials in lowering methane for ruminants and ammonia for monogastric animals. This review article mainly covered the studies in ruminants, especially focused on in vitro environment. It also summarized possible reasons of the conflicting results among studies from the perspective of experimental design...
